Curriculum Areas

The Program provides instruction for all students in seven curriculum areas through a series of courses and applied and research experiences:

  1. The Counseling Core Curriculum includes successful completion of the following courses:
    1. Counseling Psychology I: History and Theories
    2. Counseling Psychology II: Assessment
    3. Counseling Psychology III: Interviewing and Interventions
    4. Counseling Psychology Research Seminar I: Vocational and Occupational Health Psychology Research
    5. Counseling Psychology Research Seminar II: Process and Outcome Research
    6. Ethics in Psychology
    7. Multicultural Issues in Counseling Psychology
    8. Vocational and Occupational Health Psychology
    9. Career and Occupational Health Psychology Assessment
    10. Psychological Measurement
    11. WAIS-III Assessment
    12. Beginning Practicum
    13. Advanced Practicum
    14. Internship

  2. Modules on scientific and professional ethics and standards are included in 13 courses required of all Counseling Program students:
    1. Multicultural Issues in Counseling Psychology
    2. Counseling Psychology I: History and Theories
    3. Counseling Psychology II: Assessment
    4. Counseling Psychology III: Interviewing and Interventions
    5. Counseling Beginning Practicum (2 semesters)
    6. Counseling Advanced Practicum (4 semesters minimum)
    7. Ethics in Psychology
    8. The Counseling Psychology Research Seminar 2-course sequence

  3. The study of research design and methodology is emphasized in courses and through research experience under the supervision of a faculty member.This experience is required to insure proper preparation for the dissertation requirement for the Ph.D. degree, and to enhance the students' ability to use appropriate research methods and instruments in their scientific and professional careers. This research experience may be obtained by the student as a paid or unpaid research assistant on either sponsored or nonsponsored research, or a combination of these.
  1. Statistics: The Department offers a 1-year Analysis of Psychological Data course that all Counseling Psychology Students take. In addition, the department of Education offers optional additional courses in psychological scaling, multiple regression, factor analysis, path analysis and SEM, qualitative research, and computer applications.
  1. The Program offers training in psychological measurement through the required Research in Counseling Psychology seminar sequence and a required course in Psychological Measurement: Theory and Methods. In addition, students may take courses in Advanced Psychological and Educational Measurement; Measurement of Latent Traits; and seminars in Psychometric Methods.
  1. The Program also emphasizes training in psychological assessment including the following required courses:
    1. Counseling Psychology II: Assessment
    2. WAIS-III Assessment
    3. Career and Occupational Health Psychology Assessment.
    4. Students may also take optional courses in Psychopathology and Personality
    5. Assessment offered in Educational Psychology and in the Clinical Psychology area.

  2. Modules on the history and systems of psychology are offered through several required Psychology Department and Counseling Program courses including:
    1. Counseling I: History and Theories
    2. Counseling II: Assessment
    3. Vocational and Occupational Health Psychology
    4. The Department of Educational Psychology also offers the optional course, Landmark Issues, which students are encouraged to take.
