Curriculum

The Personality Research program is flexible and affords the student opportunities to develop their own areas of interest. There are, of course, recommendations from the faculty (e.g., your advisor) as to which courses will aid the student to fulfill his or her primary interest and educational foundation goals. That is, some students will take courses in child development at the world famous Institute of Child Development, or, should one have a strong personality-industrial/organizational interest, it is very possible to take courses in the I/O area of psychology as well as take courses in business. A current graduate student has philosophy as his minor program and therefore has taken several graduate level philosophy courses. In addition, our program is most heavily connected with the clinical and social areas of the Psychology Department, and many students take courses in these areas that complement their interests in personality.

The General Area Distribution Requirements for the Personality Research Program requires completion of two courses, with grades of B or better, with at least one A. (Actually, any grade less than a "B" in any graduate course is considered failing.)

The following two courses are required:

5101 Personality
8664 Personality Assessment

OR, one of the above AND one of the following:

5207 Personality and Social Behavior
8107 Cross-cultural Study of Personality
8660 The Psychopathic Personality: Theory and Research
8970 Cognitive and Motivational Processes

It may be possible to petition the Department Graduate Student Committee for a waiver of the 5101 course in Personality. A waiver is granted only if the head of the Personality Program AND the person responsible for teaching the course agrees, after reviewing all academic documents completed by the student at a different institution, that the learning goals have been meet for 5101. Waivers can be granted for other 5xxx courses in the department, but again, there is always a review process and there is no guarantee that a waiver will be granted.
