Psychology 1001: An Introduction to Psychology

Psychology 1001 is an introduction to the scientific study of human behavior and a prerequisite for all advanced psychology courses. The course introduces the problems, methods, and findings of modern psychology to beginning students. Topics include: research methods, biological psychology, sensation & perception, learning, memory, cognition & language, intelligence, development, personality, abnormal behavior, treatment, and social psychology. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, the class (about 700 students) meets from 1:25 - 2:15 in Willey Hall Auditorium on the West Bank of the Minneapolis campus. Lectures are presented by a team of senior professors from the Department of Psychology. Each professor lectures for about a week on his or her specific area of expertise. In this way, students get a preview of many of the top professors in the department and of the various subfields of psychology. The professors use a computerized multimedia presentation system in which they present their lecture outlines, graphics, and video segments via the large screen projection system. The four multiple choice exams (three midquarters and a final) also occur in the Willey Hall auditorium. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the class meets in smaller discussion sections (about 32 students each) held throughout the day in various locations. These sections are led by advanced graduate students in psychology and provide an opportunity for demonstrations, active learning experiences, and graded written work. The discussion leaders also are available to assist students with the course material.Psych 1001 students have the opportunity to earn extra credit points by participating in psychological research studies through the Psychology Department's Research Experience Program.
