    WELCOME!
Psychology Undergraduate Advising would like to welcome you to campus for the start of Fall 2011! As you get back into gear, keep our office's resources in mind. Some of you are returning from exciting summer experiences such as study abroad or internships or, for others, the less-exciting coursework and GREs. If you were like me, your summer may have flown by and you aren't quite sure what you did for those several months. No matter what your summer consisted of, we can likely help you in moving forward! Advisors in our office are available for appointments year-round to assist with psychology course-selection and major progress, career and graduate school preparation and selection, and general engagement to make the most out of your time here. To schedule an appointment, visit www.psych.umn.edu/undergrad/appointment.htm. We look forward to seeing you and wish you the best of luck in the coming semester!

FALL 2011 WALK-IN HOURS FOR PSYCHOLOGY UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING
Psychology Undergraduate Advising has designated walk-in hours. While other units may have advisors available at all times, each advisor in our unit holds walk-in hours once a week and cannot address walk-in issues outside of these. While it may seem like a quick issue (such as signing a research contract), it often takes a little more time than expected and adds up when considering our large student population. To run efficiently and serve our students best, it is important that we recognize and respect these specified walk-in times. Due to the high student demand the first two weeks of the term, we will have an advisor available from 8:00am - 4:30pm for 5 - 10 minute issues. Our normal walk-in hours will take effect after Monday, September 19th. Check for this semester's walk-in hours on our website: http://www.psych.umn.edu/undergrad/walkin.htm

    COURSES OF INTEREST

HAVE AN INTERNSHIP? REGISTER FOR ID 3208: INTERNSHIP REFLECTION
This one-credit course, which is completely online, is for students who want to get the most out of their internship through course activities that will help them: tie their internships to personal and career goals; learn what it means to be a "professional" working in professional environments; evaluate their internship performance and accomplishments, and get feedback from others; and develop a stronger resume and interviewing skills that incorporate the lessons learned in their internship. This class is open to U of M sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have secured an internship that will begin in either August or September 2011. The internship must be at least 120 hours during the semester. In order to accommodate students who are returning to campus, and who may just be finalizing their internship plans now, course activities will begin during the second week of the Fall semester. Interested students should contact Paul Timmins via email at timmi004@umn.edu for more information, as the internship will need to be verified with the site supervisor before receiving a permission number to register. This course does NOT fulfill Psychology major requirements; however, it may work towards overall degree requirements (including upper-division outside your major!).

  • Samantha Weishan & Adam Wilke are winners of the APA Engagement Awards, for Fall 2007

In 2006, The Department of Psychology received an American Psychological Association (APA) Culture of Service Award. The citation pointed out that “…the Department has a long history of commitment to service within the profession and to the public …. The Department has used the accompanying cash award to initiate a program of small grants for Psychology undergraduate majors. The goal is to assist our students in activities linking their psychology studies with outreach and public engagement.

We are pleased to announce the inaugural winners of the APA Engagement Awards, for Fall 2007. From the pool of applicants, the two candidates who best articulated the link between their academic studies in psychology and their community projects were selected for the $500 award.

Samantha Weishan is combining her knowledge of research in psychology with her role as a board member of the University YMCA. Last year she conducted an evaluation of student leaders' experiences in the organization, which will now be used to improve students' future experiences. Also this year, she will examine why student leaders who choose to remain with the organization beyond one year do so and the role of demographics in the volunteer recruitment process.

Adam Wilke is teaching a class, "Neuropsychology of Emotion", through the Twin Cities Experimental College (ExCo at http://excotc.org). The goal of ExCo is learning through shared knowledge unrestricted by the social roles inherent in traditional classroom settings. Instructors are not assumed to be the experts, but learning occurs through shared investigation of diverse viewpoints. The class is free and open to the public.

Congratulations to Samantha and Adam for successfully linking their studies in psychology with public engagement.

Two awards will be made each semester, contingent on availability of funds. Information and application materials are available at: http://www.psych.umn.edu/undergrad/apaawards.htm. The Spring 2008 deadline is December 3, 2007. Questions may be directed to Holly Hatch-Surisook, hhatch@umn.edu.
