Applying - Due December 1st

Thank you for your interest in the graduate program in psychology at the University of Minnesota. We hope you will find a program within our department that meets your needs. Applications are considered for admission for fall semester only. The application deadline is December 1.

The following documents will hopefully answer most questions about our program. If you have questions that are not answered here, please contact the Coordinator of Psychology Graduate Admissions at or 612-626-7762.

Please note that the Department of Psychology does not admit students for a terminal master's degree.

Entry Date

We admit students for the Ph.D. degree for fall semester only.

Application Deadline

The application deadline is December 1 of each year. The application materials are revised each summer and are available from September through December 1st. .

Important note about the deadline: Your ApplyYourself application is submitted to the Graduate School, and once they determine that it is complete, they will forward it to us at the Department of Psychology. We STRONGLY encourage you to submit your application early. If you wait until December 1st to submit your ApplyYourself application, it is likely it will delay the review of your application.

Note: This online application is not complete until you pay the fee with VISA/Mastercard, and then submit the application. All materials are submitted Electronically viathrough the ApplyYourself application system. Admission decisions are communicated to applicants using this system.

Transcripts Electronically via
Unofficial transcripts or academic records should be uploaded directly to the online application (under Educational Background). Please do not mail in paper copies of your transcripts, there is no need for official transcripts or academic records for initial review.

If you are admitted, the University will then request official copies of this material.

GRE Scores Electronically via

You must send official PAPER or Electronic GRE scores to the Department of Psychology. Use Institution code 6874 and Dept. code 2016. At the same time, scores need to be entered in the Test Information-Self-Reported field in ApplyYourself.

*having only unofficial scores will possibly delay the review of your application

Course Abstracts Electronically via
Upload 2 course abstracts to the Department/Program application in ApplyYourself. Further directions in the application. (example)
Applicant statement I - Personal Statement Electronically via
You can upload your personal statement into Applicant Statement I. The personal statement can be found on the Department/Program Form in ApplyYourself (instructions)

Your recommender will be required to fill out a rating form and upload a letter of recommendation

Your application will be reviewed after the application deadline of Dec. 1. Once reviewed you will be notified when the decisions are made. The Psychology Department does not send acknowledgments upon receipt of applications nor will we automatically notify applicants of missing documents. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure the arrival of all necessary documents to their correct recipients and by the deadline.
