Applying - Due December 1st

Thank you for your interest in the graduate program in psychology at the University of Minnesota. We hope you will find a program within our department that meets your needs. Applications are considered for admission for fall semester only. The application deadline is December 1.

The following documents will answer most questions about our program. If you have questions that are not answered here, please contact Robin Peterson, Coordinator of Psychology Graduate Admissions at psyapply@umn.edu or 612-626-7762.

Please note that the Department of Psychology does not admit students for a terminal master's degree.

Application Procedure

Entry Date

We admit students for the Ph.D. degree for fall semester only. Psychology graduate students attend daytime classes full time. Graduate courses are not offered in the evening or on the weekend.

Application Deadline

The application deadline is December 1 of each year. The application materials are revised each summer and are available from September through December 1st.

Important note about the deadline: Your ApplyYourself application is submitted to the Graduate School, and once they determine that it is complete, they will forward it to us at the Department of Psychology. We STRONGLY encourage you to submit your application early. If you wait until December 1st to submit your ApplyYourself application, it is likely it will delay the review of your application.

Online Application for Admission
Note: This online application is not complete until you pay the fee with VISA/Mastercard, and then submit the application. All materials are submitted electronically through the ApplyYourself application system. Admission decisions are communicated to applicants using this system.

Materials

All application materials should be submitted directly to the ApplyYourself admissions system. We cannot review your application until all of the materials listed below are submitted successfully. For specific ApplyYourself instructions please go here.

Transcripts Electronically ApplyYourself Unofficial transcripts or academic records should be uploaded directly to the online application (under Educational Background). Please do not mail in paper copies of your transcripts, there is no need for official transcripts or academic records for initial review. GRE Scores Electronically ApplyYourself Our department requires the General GRE and we strongly recommend the Psychology subject specific GRE. To learn more about our preference for the subject specific GRE please read our FAQ. Official GRE Scores will be sent electronically directly from ETS to the Graduate Admissions office by using Institution code 6874. Also, scores should be entered in the Test Information-Self-Reported field in ApplyYourself. Click here for more information about the GRE.
English Language test scores (TOEFL) Dept of Psychology TOEFL requirements. Electronically ApplyYourself Official GRE Scores will be sent electronically directly from ETS to the Graduate Admissions office by using Institution code 6874. Your application will be reviewed after the application deadline of Dec. 1. Once reviewed you will be notified when the decisions are made. The Psychology Department does not send acknowledgments upon receipt of applications nor will we automatically notify applicants of missing documents. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure the arrival of all necessary documents to their correct recipients and by the deadline. Applicants can check the current status of their application materials on Apply Yourself.
