Admission Requirements

Strong undergraduate performance—particularly in junior- and senior-year psychology courses—is a primary consideration for admission. Test scores, research and applied experience, and letters of recommendation also play a role in the decision-making process. Because our programs draw many more applicants each year than the number of openings, the Department of Psychology has established the following admission requirements and guidelines:

  • 12 semester credits (three to four courses) of psychology work beyond introductory psychology are required, including at least one course in Introductory Statistics or Introductory Psychological Measurement.
  • For the Clinical Science and Psychopathology Research Program, a course in abnormal psychology is required.

An applicant's grade point average (GPA) and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are considered in conjunction with all other information in the applicant's file.

  • All programs, with the exception of the Cognitive and Biological Psychology Program, strongly recommend that applicants provide the GRE Subject Test in Psychology score.
  • Applicants to the Industrial/Organizational Psychology Program: The Industrial/Organizational Program considers the GRE Psychology examination as one of the key pieces of information used in admission decisions. While absence of a score is not an absolute bar to admission to the I/O program, a student without a score is at a disadvantage.

International Applicants
All international applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the TOEFL iBT. Individuals who have completed an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in the U.S. are not exempt from the TOEFL requirement. The Graduate School operational standard for admission on the TOEFL iBT is a minimum total score of 79, plus a minimum score of 21 on the Writing section and 19 on the Reading section. It is recommended that international applicants to the Department of Psychology have a TOEFL iBT score of 19 or higher on the Speaking section. It is also recommended that applicants for Teaching Assistant positions have a score of 23 or higher on the Speaking section of the TOEFL iBT.

Transfer from other graduate programs at the University of Minnesota
University of Minnesota graduate students who wish to transfer into the Department of Psychology must meet the same deadlines and complete the same application materials as other applicants. The same admission requirements apply to students seeking admission by transfer.
