Resources

The department offers extensive laboratory and computing facilities, a wide variety of technical support resources, many established collaborative relationships both on and off campus, and a large number of federally funded research projects. For example, the following research centers are headquartered in the department: Center for Cognitive Sciences, Center for the Study of Political Psychology, the Center for the Study of the Individual and Society, the Center for Interest Measurement Research, the Minnesota Center for Twin and Adoption Research, and the Minnesota Center for Twin and Family Research. Other research centers with which the faculty are involved are located in Neuroscience, Psychiatry, Radiology, Epidemiology, Kinesiology and Public Health. We have adjunct faculty at the University of Minnesota Counseling and Consulting Services, Carlson School of Management, Institute of Child Development, Educational Psychology, Mechanical Engineering, and Psychiatry; and in the VA Medical Center, Hennepin County Medical Center (Minneapolis), Ramsey County Medical Center (St. Paul), and Personnel Decisions International (Minneapolis). These affiliations expand your research options and depth of knowledge.

In 1972, the psychology department moved to a new building named after Richard M. Elliott, who was department chair for many years. Elliott Hall contains approximately 112,000 square feet of offices, laboratories, classrooms, seminar rooms, and shops and lounges for faculty and students. Specific highlights include space designed to provide high-quality animal care and research facilities, computerized instructional laboratories, a technical shop in which specialized equipment can be fabricated, interviewing and laboratory rooms that incorporate observation windows, and videotaping equipment. We also provide office/workspace for all graduate students who hold an appointment in the department.

The Journal Seminar Room (JSR) is available to all department faculty and graduate students, providing study space and a micro-computing lab with a laser printer and Internet access. A copier is provided for graduate students for photocopying of JSR materials. The JSR also houses a limited number of back issues of psychology related journals and new issues donated by faculty and friends of the department.

Other campus libraries augment this convenient departmental collection. The majority of the psychology collections and services are located at the Wilson Library on the West Bank of the campus. The Biomedical Library, located on the East Bank, also houses a large collection of journals, books, and current literature indexes that cover many subareas of psychology. The University of Minnesota’s library system is also at the forefront of providing electronic access to journals. Many of the journals of interest to graduate students in psychology can be accessed for free electronically.

The Department of Psychology’s Information Services area maintains numerous computing resources for psychology graduate students. Additional computers are available in each program area through a wide variety of research projects and facilities including a department-wide network and Web development.

In sum, a distinguished and accessible faculty, a select and diverse student body, extensive research opportunities, superb facilities, and the resources of the entire University of Minnesota system provide a unique opportunity and challenge for those interested in graduate study in psychology.
