Research in objective personality
assessment has been my main focus. This work has involved
studying personality characteristics across a wide variety
of populations and conditions. Much of this research has
involved the use of the objective personality assessment
instrument-the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory.
Over the past 15 years I have been involved in a program
of research revising the MMPI (developing MMPI-2) and developing
an adolescent version of the instrument (MMPI-A). My recent
work has also focused upon the study of abnormal behavior
across cultures. I recently completed a compendium of research
involving 53 psychologists from around the world conducting
research on adapted versions of the MMPI-2 around the world.
I have also been involved in developing
an objective personality inventory aimed at assessing personality
characteristics of people undergoing psychological treatment.
This inventory, the Butcher Treatment Planning Inventory
(BTPI), is an objective self report instrument that can
be used to detect possible problems some people have becoming
engaged in psychological therapy.
