The Psychoacoustics Lab often recruits new human listeners to serve as research subjects in experiments on auditory perception. Experiments typically require the listener to wear a pair of headphones while sitting in a soundproof booth. Brief sounds, for instance tones or clicks, are played over the headphones. The listener is then asked to make simple decisions about what they heard, such as whether one sound is louder than another, or whether one sound is qualitatively different from another. The listener enters responses into a computer by pressing keys on the computer keyboard. Information as to whether the listener has made a correct response is then displayed on the computer monitor.

Which of the two sounds is louder?

Which of the three sounds is different?

Experimental sessions usually last two hours, during which time the listener will be seated in the soundproof booth for 10-15-minute periods with brief rest periods in between. It is desirable for subjects to perform in at least three two-hour sessions (a total of six hours) per week. Subjects are asked to establish a fixed schedule for participation and to stick to it each week. The specific times during which the subject participates are negotiable based on the subject’s other commitments and the time slots that are available in the lab. Experiments are run only on weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Several weeks or months are required to obtain complete data from a subject, so an individual subject is usually needed for at least a semester. Often, it is possible for a subject to continue participating in experiments for additional semesters or during the summer.

Subjects will be given a brief hearing test to determine their ability to hear weak sounds. An invitation to participate as a subject in our experiments is dependent on the outcome of this test. Most often, we are looking for subjects with normal hearing as determined by the test.

Subjects will be initially paid $10.00/hour to participate in the experiments. After you have participated for a total of 25 hours, you will receive $11.00 for each subsequent hour that you participate in this experiment
