Making decisions about your career is a difficult and often overwhelming task. Many factors are likely to influence the direction you choose to go.

Discussing your situation with a career counselor, family members, and other important people in your life can be a useful way of sorting through the pros and cons of various options. In addition, the self-help section of your library or bookstore offers a number of publications related to the career decision making process.

There are several sites on the World Wide Web that provide information that may be useful as you evaluate your options. Several of these web sites are listed below.


America’s Career InfoNet

 Sponsored by the U.S. Employment and Training Administration, this site offers profiles on hundreds of occupations. Information about average wages and job availability are included.

The Black Collegian

Features articles and interviews related to a variety of occupational areas.

Catapult Career Planning Information

A site established for career counselors that may be of use to individuals looking for job search sources, career information, online journals, and reference materials.

Careers On-line Virtual Career Show

Contains descriptions of over 1,000 occupations and jobs.

Careers, Not Just Jobs

A daily newsletter produced by Dow Jones & Company, Inc. that features articles relevant to career decision making.

Through interactive quizzes and practical articles, this site can help you assess your readiness for a career change. Regular updates on employment trends and tips for job searching also are provided.

I-Seek

A state-funded web site that offers a wide range of tools useful for career and educational planning. Includes self-assessments, descriptions of career areas, and links to job posting databases.

DBM

Statistics on employment, wages, industries, and other factors relevant to career decision making. Information tends to be fairly technical making this site less user friendly than others sites.

Occupational Outlook Handbook

 Provides the full content of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics publication which includes information about typical work environments, salary ranges, and training requirements for over 200 occupations.

The Princeton Review Online

A comprehensive site that helps you organize your career interests and assists you in identifying potentially satisfying work environments. Tips on resume writing and interviewing also are included.

US News and World Report: Find your Career

One of the most extensive career guides on the Web, this site highlights occupations that are in the greatest demand, provides links to other sources, and offers an extensive database of occupations.
