Psychology Course Instructor Information

Getting your class set up to participate in REP:

  1. Email the REP administrator and let her know:
    • That your class will offering REP points.
    • How many points you will be offering.
    • Whether you are okay with REP researchers making announcements before your class (researchers need to coordinate that with you first, of course)
  2. On the day following the drop/add period, (Tuesday of the 3rd week of class) please send an Excel spreadsheet containing your class enrollment information: student names, ID numbers, section and email addresses.

How REP will work for you:

  • How many points to offer?
    • Psy 1001 offers 15 REP points--it works out to ~5% of the total points earned in the class. If you offer more than 15 points, your students may see their points "capped" at 15, but that is an artifact of the REP database. At the end of the semester, all of their points will be reported to you.
  • Staying informed:
    • You will be copied on all email announcements regarding the REP system.
  • How will you know how many points your students have earned?
    • At the end of the semester--usually towards the end of finals week--the REP administrator will email you an excel spreadsheet with all your students and their points.
  • One important reminder for you:
    • Students must be in the REP database to receive credit for their REP participation. Students who enroll after you have sent the class list will not be in the database.
  • Two important announcements for your students:
    • Remind students to keep a record of their participation that includes study number (very important), researcher name and email.
    • The REP system now has a -1 point penalty for not showing up for a REP study. This "ping" can be awarded when students have signed up for a study AND received confirmation of that study then NOT showed up. If the student is unable to make an appointment at the last minute, all they need to do is contact the researcher to avoid the ping.

How REP works for your students:

  • Students can sign up for studies at the bulletin board in Elliott Hall or review active studies and reserve seats on-line by going to http://www.psych.umn.edu/research/rep/default.htm
  • Students should receive a confirmation for studies the night before it occurs. If the student can't participate, he or she should let the researcher know. We have introduced a -1 point penalty for not showing up for a REP study. This "ping" can be awarded by researchers when students have signed up for a study AND received confirmation of that study but fails to show up. If the student is unable to make an appointment at the last minute, all they need to do is contact the researcher to avoid the ping.
  • Students can confirm that REP points have been awarded at http://www.psych.umn.edu/research/rep/default.htm
  • Students should keep a record of their REP participation that includes study number (very important!), researcher name and email.
    • If there are any problems (for example, if points have not been awarded by the milestone dates given below) students should email the researcher. If the researcher doesn't respond, they should email the study number to the REP administrator.
  • Researchers are asked to enter points four times during the semester, corresponding with Psy 1001 exams.
  • The last day for participation this semester is Friday, Dec 5, and all points must be entered by Monday, Dec 8.
