Decision-making and Emotional Mechanisms in Schizophrenia:

The Study:
-Participation involves 2 hours of computer tasks.
-Subjects will be reimbursed $24 for their time and travel expenses.

Criteria - In order to participate in the study, individuals:
-Must not have a history of head trauma or seizures.
-Must not abuse drugs or alcohol.
-Must be between the ages of 18 and 45.
-Must not have a familial history of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.

Thinking and Brain Study:

Study Requirements & Procedures:
-In order to participate you must be between 45 and 60 years old, not have any history of psychiatric illness, have normal or corrected vision, and not have any conditions that may not be good for MR scanning (e.g., a heart pacemaker or claustrophobia).
-The study involves 3 visits to the VA Medical Center. During the initial visit you will have an interview, and blood draw. The second visit will consist of completing a number of neurocognitive nehavioral testing. At the final visit, we will ask you to complete an EEG (electroencephalography) where we will measure your brain waves while you complete more cognitive tasks.
-You may also have the opportunity to go to the University of Minnesota to complete an fMRI scan.


Risks & Compensation:
-There is no evidence that any harmful or adverse effects can be expected based on over 15 years of MRI experience with human subjects (both adults and children). For your safety, you will be screened by a researcher for eligibility for MRI scanning.
-You will be compensated for your time and travel.
-$225 for the three testing sessions at the VA Medical Center.
-$60 for completing the MRI portion of the study.
-This results in a maximum total of $285.
