NEW! PSYCHOLOGY B.S. MAJOR- INFORMATION SESSIONS
After much excitement and anticipation, the Department of Psychology is preparing to begin discussing the upcoming Psychology B.S. major! Our estimated timeline is to begin declaring majors in the Spring or Summer of 2010. However, we are currently awaiting two final approval stages prior to implementation. Once the approvals have been completed, Psychology Advising will be working quickly to coordinate with the proper University systems (such as APAS and Graduation Planner). These system implementations are necessary prior to executing thedeclaration process for this new major.
A Brief History
The original version of the Psychology B.S. Major is listed on the U of MN catalog website. Because the original proposal for the Psychology B.S. major went through a multi-year approval process, a second look at the coursework for the program was required prior to roll-out. Several necessary adjustments were made to this original proposal and the adjustments must be reviewed and approved by those same committees. These proposed changes have passed through the first of three final approval stages.
Currently
In preparation for Spring 2010 registration, the Department of Psychology's Undergraduate Advising Office has been offering information sessions for students to learn more about this exciting new option. These sessions allow us to reach more students at once, rather than setting up single appointments. This is a much more efficient process during the busy time of registration. As we move forward, single appointments may be available. Students will eventually meet individually with Psychology Advisors to declare the Psychology B.S. Major.
Information sessions are genereally quick and cover the basic information necessary to make informed registration decisions. These information sessions will help clarify the expectations of the major, discuss the "good fit" factor, and update students with the current state of the approval process.
Below, you wil find information on deciding if the Psychology B.S. major will be appropriate for your future plans. You will also find infomation on how to sign up for an information session.
Is the Psychology B.S. major a good fit for you?
YES!
The B.S. is a good fit for you if you are interested in:
- scientific fields of study
- cognitive and biological psychology
- neuroscience
- medical careers
- computer science and mathematics
- research
NO!
The following do not make you a good candidate for the B.S.:
- You are hoping to escape the second language requirement - If you are not interested in the sciences, these courses will not be easier than fulfilling the language requirement. Plus, having a second language will offer you greater flexibility with career options.
- You are hoping the B.S. will move you more quickly through your degree - Because most language courses are 5 credits, it will probably take you just as much time to fulfill the 18 credits in science courses for the B.S. as the language requirement for the B.A.
- You think that a B.S. degree will "look better" on your record - If your career goal is not within the sciences area, a B.S. degree may limit you in course options relevant to your future career. The B.S. will not be of assistance to you in gaining entrance to a career or graduate program, unless it is highly focused scientific career or program.
