NEW! PSYCHOLOGY B.S. MAJOR- INFORMATION SESSIONS
After much excitement and anticipation, the Department of Psychology is preparing to begin discussing the upcoming Psychology B.S. major! Our estimated timeline is to begin declaring majors in the Spring of 2010. However, several stages of approval and preparation must first be implemented prior to declaring this new major.
A Brief History
An original version of the Psychology B.S. Major is still listed on the UofMN catalog website. Because the original proposal for the B.S. went through a multi-year long approval process, a second look at the coursework and structure of the program was required prior to roll-out. Several necessary adjustments were made to this original proposal. This stage has now been completed. These proposed changes have passed through the first of the final approval stage, and have two more to go.
Currently
In preparation for Spring 2010 registration, the Department of Psychology's Undergraduate Advising Office is offering information sessions for students to learn more about this exciting new option. Five Information Sessions regarding the new Bachelor of Science Psychology major have been set up for the last week in October. These sessions will cover several items. You will receive updated information about the progress being made in bringing this new option to our students. We will help clarify the expectations of the major, to include more information about the structure and the coursework. Finally, we will discuss the "good fit" factor, what type of student should consider a B.S. in psychology and why it may not be a good fit for others.
Is the Psychology B.S. major a good fit for you?
YES!
The B.S. is a good fit for you if you are interested in:
- scientific fields of study
- cognitive and biological psychology
- neuroscience
- medical careers
- computer science and mathematics
NO!
The following do not make you a good candidate for the B.S.:
- You are hoping to escape the second language requirement - If you are not interested in the sciences, these courses will not be easier than fulfilling the language requirement. Plus, having a second language will offer you greater flexibility with career options.
- You are hoping the B.S. will move you more quickly through your degree - Because most language courses are 5 credits, it will probably take you just as much time to fulfill the 18 credits in science courses for the B.S. as the language requirement for the B.A.
- You think that a B.S. degree will "look better" on your record - If your career goal is not within the sciences area, a B.S. degree may limit you in course options relevant to your future career. The B.S. will not be of assistance to you in gaining entrance to a career or graduate program, unless it is highly focused scientific career or program.
