Procedure for Declaring a Major in Psychology
How Do I Declare a Major in Psychology?
1. Complete the Educational Planning Questionnaire.
The questionnaire should help your advisor learn a bit about
you during your appointment, and should help you to clarify both
your short- and long-term educational, career and personal goals.
It will not be evaluated to determine your admission
to the psychology major but will help your advisor to know why you
have chosen psychology as your major.
2. Set up an appointment with a Psychology Advisor. You may call (612) 625-8520, e-mail (psyadvis@umn.edu) or stop by S105 Elliott.
3. Bring your questionnaire to your scheduled advising appointment.
4. Bring a current, unofficial U of MN transcript to your appointment. You can print a copy from "Onestop" on the University web site.
At Your Declaration Appointment5. Discuss the Educational Planning Questionnaire with your Advisor, review the requirements for completing the psychology major, and discuss the services and resources Psychology Advising offers you.
6. Complete the Major Program Form. You must deliver the completed form to either your CLA Student Community or the CLA Student Information Office (49 Johnston) [if CLA is not your college of enrollment]. The Major Program Form gives official notice to the College that you are a psychology major.
Students are encouraged to check back with a psychology advisor at least once a year. You will also receive an e-mail notification inviting you to an individual Junior/Senior Check-In appointment when you have between 75 and 90 credits completed. Walk In Hours are available for quick questions; these times are posted on Advisors' doors. Prospective majors are also welcome to see an advisor concerning course options and interests as often as they wish. Students are not required to specialize in a particular area within psychology for their BA degree but may choose psychology course electives which focus on a particular area.
