Internship FAQs
If I have set up my own internship, can I participate in the internship class (Psy 3996)?
Yes! You may apply to the class once you have set up an internship. To do so, submit the following form: http://www.psych.umn.edu/undergrad/3996application.pdf.
How many hours must I complete in class & at the internship site?
Students enrolled in Psy 3996 will complete an average of 8 hours per week at the internship site for a total of 120 hours over the course of the term. Students will participate in a twice weekly seminar, for a total of three classroom hours each week.
Is there any other way I can receive psychology credit for an internship experience?
Yes, you may sign up for the independent version of Psy 3996 (sec 001). For this option, you MUST
find a faculty sponsor, in addition to securing your own internship. You and the faculty mentor will work out a
learning contract for the academic credit component of the internship. This method of obtaining credit is
quite difficult to secure since it requires a significant time investment on the part of the faculty mentor -
time that many faculty simply do not have to spare. It is because of the historic difficulty students have had
setting up an internship in this independent manner that the classroom-based version of the internship
opportunity was developed. Don’t be surprised if you simply cannot find a faculty sponsor!
What if I don’t need the credits for my internship?
Many, many students participate in internships in the Twin Cities community without receiving academic
credit for these experiences. It is up to you to secure the internship opportunity and make sure that you get
the experience you want. Many local agencies are accustomed to working with students from the various
institutions in the metro area and have well-developed opportunities of which you may take advantage. If
you’d like assistance with locating an opportunity, both the Psychology Advising Office (S105 Elliott) and
the Career & Community Learning Center (135 Johnston) can provide some assistance.
